Morrisons has become the latest supermarket to cut petrol prices, a move it said means it is “leading the market”.
The price cut brings unleaded petrol down to 97.9p and diesel to 109.9p, just days after the supermarket made an earlier cut in prices.
Chief executive at the supermarket Marc Bolland said this is “great news” for people who are looking to buy fuel there.
“Yet again, this shows our commitment to giving great value to all our customers – whether they’re doing their weekly shop at Morrisons or filling up their cars at our forecourts,” he said.
Asda also lowered the price of fuel last week, as the oil firm BP did likewise.
Morrisons claimed that motorists at all of the company’s 287 forecourts will see the benefits of the move.
Prime minister Gordon Brown last week called on petrol firms to follow the lead of supermarkets and offer cheaper fuel for consumers, especially as the economic situation worsens for many.
Following the move by Morrisons, Asda stepped up again and made further fuel cuts itself.
