Mobile payment is in demand, study contends


Consumers are beginning to show more demand for payment services via mobile phones, a new study has claimed.

The research from O2 and GFK found that 90% of the trialists enjoyed using Near Field Communications (NFC) on a mobile telephone and that 78% would want to use contactless methods of payment if they were initiated.

Head of NFC Clare Malsen claimed that in the future in could be possible to use mobile technology in numerous ways.

“To make this a reality we need to work across industry with a shared vision of what commercial services will look like,” she commented.

Consumers were able to touch their phones against readers using the NFC capabilities in retail stores as part of the research.

Visa added that one-in-five trialists said they would purchase a mobile telephone in the future if it came with payWave functionality, allowing them to buy goods without cash.

Senior vice president of innovation at the outfit Sandra Alzetta said that the general public is interested by the convenience of such payment opportunities.

He remarked: “This trial has shown us that consumers really like the concept of an NFC phone and can appreciate the numerous benefits of adding a payment facility to the usual functionality of their mobile.”
