Supermarkets are being targeted by ministers distributing the government’s healthy eating cookbook for children.
Over 330,000 copies of the Real Meals book – which is also available on the internet – have already been sold.
Ed Balls, schools secretary, said: “We are making sure that all children will learn basic cooking skills at school and we are putting the funding and staff in to make that a reality.
“We are also speaking to major supermarkets about supporting our reforms – we need their help to get the healthy eating message over to families directly.”
In November, Jamie Oliver called for the creation of a minister of healthy eating, arguing this could improve people’s diets.
And TNS said that only 12% of Brits are eating the recommended intake of five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
