A number of grocery retailers enjoyed strong online sales leading up to Christmas even though the high street was hit by the credit crunch, Nielsen has said.
The research company said between October and December last year, Marks & Spencer (M&S) saw a 46% rise in sales compared with the year before.
Asda boosted online sales by 53% over the same period of time while Tesco had 7.3 million web customers on average per month.
Nielsen communications director Alex Burmaster said: “Online retail won’t be impervious to the tighter financial environment but it has an opportunity to weather the storm better than other elements of the economy.”
Before Christmas, Tesco and M&S both slipped in the latest ForeSee online satisfaction index.
