Marks & Spencer is to offer online shoppers delivery for a penny from today(11 November) until the end of the week.
The initiative is part of the retailer’s 125th birthday celebrations but is also likely to boost online business at the start of the festive season.
M&S usually charges shoppers £3.50 for UK standard delivery.
Online retailing is central to M&S’s growth. The retailer aims to generate online sales of £500m by 2012.
This Friday(13 November), M&S will reprise its Penny Bazaar when a range of goods including Christmas products will be on sale for 1p each.
Money raised will go to charities but shoppers will also be given a booklet of vouchers offering 12.5% discounts over the Christmas period.
Marks & Spencer also aims to grow sales of party food by up to 30% this Christmas with three-for-two and half-price offers in a bid to drive up food sales by up to £40m.
The move follows the success of M&S’ Dine-in-for-two for £10 campaign, which resulted in 4.5m meal sales in M&S’s first half and was followed up by similar offers such as the Pizza meal Deal.
