M&S and Co-op move to slash energy bills

Marks & Spencer and the Co-operative aim to slash their multi-million pound energy bills by using a new remote energy management system.

The service, which monitors energy use and issues warnings if there is a problem, is now being rolled out to other retailers after BT signed a deal with the company behind the project – environment technology specialist Adam International.

The Stockport-based company is working with M&S to cut energy consumption at its stores by 25%

A project with the Co-operative Group has looked at cutting its energy bill by £1.2m a year – significantly reducing its carbon footprint. The cuts equate to 8% on an energy bill of £15million – growing to a 20% saving by 2012.

High street retailer Boots is also to employ the system.

BT engineers will be seconded to Adam International – allowing it to expand the use of the wireless remote energy management system into new markets.
