Marks & Spencer plans ‘second day sale’

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is panning another one day sale after it said consumers responded extremely well to its reductions last week.

While the company would not confirm the new promotion, it said it would not “rule anything out” after its promotion.

Pali international retail analyst Nick Bubb said sales are like a “drug”.

He commented: “Once a retailer gets hooked on discounts, you can’t get off. And consumers now expect it from all the big department stores.”

Sources said M&S had been boosted by its first pre-Christmas sale in four years.

Earlier this month, the retailer said like-for-like food sales were down 5.7%.
