Marks & Spencer (M&S) has confirmed it will hold a second 20%-off sale this Thursday (4 December).
Following a similar promotion last month, the company said it knows consumers have been hit in the pocket by the recession.
Chairman Sir Stuart Rose said: “We know that people are feeling the pinch and we want to give them a helping hand in the run-up to Christmas.”
Some stores will open early tomorrow, staying open late to midnight.
The sale applies to clothing, all homewares and wine, M&S said, both in store and over the internet.
Other retailers have also said they are planning reductions, such as Debenhams and Littlewoods Direct.
According to new quarterly figures released this week, Tesco is feeling the pinch from the recession, witnessing a drop in sales growth to 2%.
