M&S demonstration called off for talks

A demonstration to protest at the planned closure of Northern Foods’ factory in Grantham, Lincolnshire, has been called off to allow talks.

Members of the GMB trade union were to march on Marks & Spencer’s store in Plymouth city centre at lunchtime today.

The Fenland Foods plant, which produces Italian ready meals for M&S, is slated to close in August after Northern Foods pulled out of the deal.

New terms demanded by M&S were said to have made the deal insufficiently profitable.

More than 700 jobs could be lost if the plant shuts.

But behind-the-scenes talks have now taken place between the company and the GMB that have led to an agreement for a meeting to take place between the company and the union “to explore all the options for the future of this factory”.
