A Lidl store in Bishop Auckland was the first store to sell a £250,000 top-prize Health Lottery ticket last Saturday (21 January).
The first winner of the £250,000 prize matched all five numbers in the TV draw on Saturday night hosted by the Melinda Messenger.
The winner, a 23-year-old woman from Bishop Auckland, was delighted to have scooped the biggest top prize yet. She plans to continue playing The Health Lottery each week and intends to use some of the money to help fund her education. She was not alone in her winning experience on The Health Lottery as over 19,000 others also celebrated wins of £500 and £50 on Saturday night.
Operated for and behalf of 51 local society lotteries across England, Wales and Scotland, The Health Lottery supports health-related causes.
The three-minute TV draw show format now showcases where the good causes money raised is being spent and is shown exclusively on Channel 5 in the first ad break after 9.55pm. The change in format is said to have been driven by players’ interest in seeing where the 20p in every pound raised was being spent.
To date, numerous local health causes across Great Britain have received funds. Causes supported include the Medway Carers Centre in Gillingham, Kent, the Alzheimer’s Society, Country Durham, the Youth Sports Trust in the West Midlands and the WRVS on the Scottish borders providing support to isolated residents.
This week the People’s Health Trust will present the selected health causes in the local society lottery areas supported in this week’s draw with cheques for the money raised. The independent charity is responsible for distributing lottery cash.

Well done! When I first checked my Health lottery results http://uklotterynews.wordpress.com/ I thought it might of gone to a second chance winner again like we’ve seen in the past few draws. Good to see them increasing the jackpot though!
