Regional property director at the company Jonathan Watkins told Property Week that in order to meet expansion plans of between 8% and 12% over the coming 15 years, land such as this will have to be utilised.

He suggested that these areas have the “requirements” for the implementation of food stores and that commitments can be met.

“Developers are looking for new opportunities and alternative ways of generating income and they are coming to us to find solutions for their sites because they know we are well funded and dependable,” he said.

Watkins stated that the company will attempt to continue expansion for a “considerable” time and that Lidl has a goal to open as many stores as it can.

No limit has been put on the growth that the company expects to see in the coming years.
