The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has said that the Liberal Democrats’ call for minimum pricing in the alcohol industry is “wrong”.
Last week, leader of the party Nick Clegg signalled that the proposal would make up a policy paper due to be released next month.
But chief executive at the WSTA Jeremy Beadles said that it is “odd” the party would opt for such measures, especially as it is “committed to cutting taxes”.
“Minimum pricing set by government is wrong; it punishes all consumers for the problems caused by a minority and will do nothing to address the real reasons for alcohol misuse,” he said.
Vice president at the Royal Statistical Society Professor Sheila Bird has said that politicians in Scotland should rethink plans to ban the sale of alcohol to those under the age of 21.
