Imperial Tobacco to shed UK manufacturing jobs

Imperial Tobacco is to close its cigar factory in Bristol and reorganise its cigarette factory in Nottingham with the potential loss of 285 jobs.

Cigar production will be transferred to Spain, while exported brands produced in Nottingham will move to other European factories.

Nottingham will continue to make Imperial Tobacco cigarettes for sale in the UK and Ireland.

All 75 jobs at Bristol are set to go, while about 210 jobs will be lost in Nottingham.

But the group’s headquarters will remain in Bristol, where some 25 extra jobs will be created.

The job losses are part of a worldwide reorganisation of the group following its purchase of rival manufacturer Altadis in January 2008.

Worldwide, six factories will close, from a total of 58, and some 2,440 jobs will be lost from a total workforce of 40,000.
