HMRC investigates cigarette haul

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officials are carrying out an investigation after six million cigarettes were seized at the Eastern Docks in Dover on 27 August.

Officers working for the UK Borders Agency (UKBA) discovered the items as they carrying out a vehicle containing frozen fruit.

The lorry’s driver, 27-year-old Ronan Hughes from Northern Ireland, was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with duty evasion.

Regional spokesperson in the South-East at HMRC Bob Gaiger said that any others who try to smuggle cigarettes will be punished accordingly.

“HMRC and UKBA will not hesitate to take action against those involved in cigarette and tobacco smuggling,” he said.

The latest discovery came after the Association of Convenience Stores welcomed the finding of nine million fake cigarettes in Suffolk last month.
