But the dismal summer hit ice cream sales, which were down by 1.6% on 2006.

Potato products led the way, showing year-on-year growth of 9.9%, closely followed by the fish sector at 8.7%.

Meat and poultry showed 6.9% growth, which BFFF director general Brian Young said was driven “by a real surge in cook-from-frozen joints pioneered by Iceland.”

Confectionery and desserts grew at 5.5% while the pizza category improved by 4.4%.

Said Young: “A resurgent Iceland, a strong performance from Asda, an improving offer in their premium lines from Sainsbury’s, strong performance at Tesco and a solid performance in Morrisons, have all helped to buoy the frozen food sector.”

The figures are based on data supplied by TNS and cover the year to 9 September 2007.
