Free range chicken sales surge in wake of Jamie Oliver show

Sales of organic and free-range chicken have surged in response to recent programmes by celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, according to the Daily Express.

The TV shows highlighted the conditions in which some intensively reared chickens are kept.

Sainsbury’s told the newspaper this week that sales of free-range, organic and RSPCA Freedom Food chicken had soared by a record 50%. But “value” chicken was also up.

Waitrose saw sales of organic chicken up 31% in the second week of January, while free-range was up 24%.

Branches ran out of free-range chicken thighs last weekend, the Express said.
