A worldwide consumer survey has found increasing consumer support for the Fairtrade system.
Some 14,500 shoppers from 15 countries, including the UK, were canvassed for the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) body.
Three-quarters of them said companies should actively support community development in developing countries.
They also supported the idea of trade deals where “justice and equality” were integral to transactions.
“With the devastating impacts of the global recession and the credit crunch, producers need Fairtrade now more than ever,” said FLO chief executive Rob Cameron.
Some 82% of British consumers knew the Fairtrade mark, the highest recognition level in the survey.
