Dunnes Stores, the Irish grocery and clothing retailer, has refused to comment on speculation that the company could be sold to Asda.
The union Mandate said that workers are concerned they may lose their jobs should any takeover materialise.
General secretary Gerry Light said: “Why does the parent company not come out and say there is no truth in the rumours? It could have dispelled the speculation 48 hours ago but has fuelled it with silence.”
Asda has dismissed the speculation as simply a rumour.
This week, Asda welcomed the move by the Bank of England to lower interest rates to 3%, saying it should rejuvenate consumer confidence.
