The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is to undertake research to discover how to reverse the decline in domestic production.
The English Farming and Food Partnerships will conduct a survey of growers of UK fresh produce on behalf of Defra.
Defra said UK fresh produce production was declining over all sectors except sweet peppers.
The survey will look at issues such as environmental sustainability, business collaboration and how producer organisations are used.
Defra aims to halt the decline in home production which has resulted from competitive imports.
