Consumers overcharged for organics at supermarkets, claims Riverford

Supermarkets are overcharging consumers for organic vegetables, it has been claimed by Riverford’s Rob Haward.

Haward, operations director at the home delivery outfit, suggested to the Daily Telegraph that the business models operated by these organisations are “financially redundant”.

Shoppers at supermarkets end up paying more than they would if they were to buy like items at smaller retailers, he stated, because of an insistence by the firms to get produce from large central warehouses.

“And those costs get passed on to their customers,” he told the paper.

His thoughts were given more flesh by Isobel Davies, operator of Farmaround, who said: “It’s cheaper to get a box of vegetables delivered directly to your door. Not only is the produce less expensive, but you also save on petrol.”
