Consumers have begun to feel worried about the current economic condition towards the end of September, according to a new survey.
The Consumer Confidence Barrier carried out by GfK NOP showed that while consumers stated to be more optimistic at the start of the month, this good feeling dwindled as it neared an end.
Rachael Joy from the Consumer Confidence Team said that people’s general level of pessimism is currently at levels unseen since the recession in the nineties.
“While they are still nervous of their personal financial situation and the economy in general, we could be seeing people beginning to acclimatise to the situation,” she commented.
For the first two weekends in September, the index stood at -32, the organisation said, but this had fallen to -36 for the third weekend, after the banking crisis had become more defined.
Recently, the same outfit said that consumers are likely to spend the same amount of money this Christmas as they did in 2007.
