The Co-operative has been voted the nation’s top animal welfare-friendly supermarket at the RSPCA Good Business Awards 2009.
The Co-op swept home with 59% of the vote to take the RSPCA People’s Choice Award, in conjunction with The Independent, which recognises the British supermarket that is making the biggest contribution to improve animal welfare.
Sainsbury’s won the award for most improved supermarket for its continued commitment to deliver on animal welfare principles, including having the largest range of Freedom
Food labelled products.
Cheshire butchers Edge and Son, captured the independent food retailer
category for their good supply chain management and dedication to
communicating the animal welfare message to their customers and local
school children.
Organic food delivery company, Abel & Cole, was highly commended for its innovation and dedication to ethical sourcing and animal welfare.
The awards, presented at London’s One Marylebone, were judged by an independent panel of industry experts based on criteria set out by the RSPCA.
“As the first ever winner of the People’s Choice Award, the
Co-operative’s continued commitment to animal welfare, which it applies
right across its product ranges, has obviously struck a chord with the
British public,” said Richard Johnson, one of the panel of four judges
in the food category.
