The number of young people joining the Co-operative Group’s membership scheme has more than doubled since it re-introduced the dividend scheme last year, the society said today.
Before the re-launch of the scheme in September 2006, just 16% per cent of the group’s old loyalty cardholders were aged under 40, and 25% were men.
But almost 40% of new members are aged under 40, and nearly 35% are men.
Overall membership has risen by 500,000 (25%) in a year, the company says.
The group claims its ethical stance is one of the key reasons for the increases, as well as the ability to influence the Co-op’s policies.
