The Co-op wins national green supermarket accolade

The Co-operative Group has been named Green Supermarket of the Year at the Grocer Gold Awards in London, beating off competition from Tesco, Ocado and Morrisons.

The award was given to the retailer that had done the most in the past year to reduce its impact on the environment and change consumer behaviour.

The Co-op was praised for a series of recent initiatives, including the introduction of regional energy managers by The Co-operative Food, as well as its progress in packaging reduction in line with the retailer’s Food Ethical Policy. The judges also highlighted the group’s position as one of the largest consumers of green electricity in the world, with 98% of the electricity to its sites obtained from wind and hydro-power.

Tim Hurrell, managing director of Food Retail at The Co-op, said: “We’re proud of this accolade which underlines how we are leading the way in reducing our impact on the environment, not just in our food business, but in The Co-operative Group as a whole.”
