Co-op creates workplace domestic violence policy


The Co-operative Group (Co-op) today outlined its new workplace domestic violence policy, claiming that issues centered around such physical abuse are not limited to the home.

Support will be made available to workers who are involved in instances of domestic violence and the retailer will offer a programme of awareness on the topic.

Head of diversity Amanda Jones said: “As a responsible employer we believe it is important to promote the understanding that everyone has the right to a life free from abuse in any form and that domestic violence is wholly unacceptable and inexcusable.

“We are aware that the challenges that domestic violence victims can manifest themselves in problems such as chronic absenteeism or lower productivity.

“That is why when addressing performance and safety issues, The Co-op will make reasonable efforts to consider all aspects of the employee’s situation and/or safety problems to support them through a challenging time.”

She said the policy applies equally to men and women.

In November, a parliamentary committee said cut-price alcohol sold in supermarkets should be banned to lower street violence.
