Carlsberg is to close a Leeds brewery and 170 jobs will be lost as a result, the drinks maker said today.
Citing greater regulatory pressure, a decrease in consumption and higher duties, the company said the site will close in 2011.
Staff will be redeployed where possible, the firm said, while it will help others to find jobs when this cannot be done.
The announcement comes after Scottish & Newcastle revealed last week it will stop producing Miller Beer in the UK.
Supply chain director at Carlsberg Nick Webb said: “We are announcing the closure proposal more than two years in advance so that our employees are able to prepare for the future.
“We have to consider difficult decisions to remain competitive in the current environment and we regret the risk to the jobs of our employees.”
Carlsberg said it can no longer run two breweries in the UK – it has another one in Northampton – during the current economic situation.
Tesco last month caused chaos after offering cheap crates of Carlsberg.
