BRC’s lobbying ability strengthens

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is sharpening its lobbying operation by reorganising its policy and public affairs teams, which will further improve the organisation’s ability to ensure retail’s case is heard by decision makers.

The changes, which reflect members’ evolving priorities, will strengthen the BRC’s effectiveness in areas including online retailing, sustainability, environment and minimising the impact of European regulation.

A new public affairs department is being created specifically to build even stronger links with the UK governments as well as Brussels and Strasbourg. As part of this, the BRC is creating a new Brussels public affairs post and collaborating more closely with European Retailers’ body EuroCommerce.

Demonstrating its commitment to responsible retailing, the BRC is also appointing a sustainability policy adviser to complement its existing environment specialist. The new role will cover sustainable sourcing, of both food and non-food products, and ethical trade and labour issues.

Stephen Robertson, director general at BRC, said: “This is a significant strengthening of the BRC’s lobbying ability to reflect retail’s evolving priorities and ensure that the BRC is making a difference in Whitehall and beyond.

“The new structure will help us deploy our existing expertise even more effectively while putting more lobbying firepower behind the issues that matter most to members.”
