Booker sales up but tobacco ban still hurts

Wholesaler Booker has reported total sales up by 1.9% during the 14 weeks to 4 July.

The figures, announced in a trading update ahead of this morning’s annual general meeting, showed the company still being hurt by the ban on smoking in public places.

Tobacco sales declined by 2.2%, or by 4.3% on a like-for-like basis.

But non-tobacco sales were up by 4.7%, or by 3.3% like-for-like.

Sales and profits remained in line with management expectations, the company said.

Chief executive Charles Wilson said: “This was a good performance and Booker continues to make progress in a challenging market.”
