Big four commit to packaging waste reduction

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons sign up to WRAP initiative

WRAP

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons are among a group of 13 retailers that have signed up to the Government’s Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), launched last autumn with the aim of reducing the amount of waste packaging and food thrown away in Britain.

The retailers have made the so-called Courtauld Commitment “at executive level” to supporting WRAP in its objectives, which include designing out packaging waste growth in 2008, to deliver absolute reductions in packaging waste by March 2010 and the identify ways to tackle the problem of food waste. Strategies under consideration to reduce the average £400 of waste discarded by each consumer every year include reducing layers of packaging to light-weighting some packaging materials.

The other retailers signed up include Boots, Budgens, the Co-operative Group, Londis, Iceland, Kwik Save, Marks & Spencer, Somerfield and Waitrose. They have agreed to meet with environment minister Elliot Morley to discuss progress in a year’s time.
