Benn: Farmers can help bring down food prices

Farmers can help with the problem of growing food prices worldwide, it has been claimed.

Hilary Benn

Secretary of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Hilary Benn urged famers to raise food production in an effort to reduce the cost of products.

He suggested that farmers are “ideally placed” to boost agricultural production in the UK.

“Food production needs to rise by 50% by 2050 to meet the demands of the world population,” he commented at the Labour party’s conference in Manchester.

The politician also said that supermarkets should forge greater links with the faming community as there is a “real opportunity” for the agriculture sector in the years to come.

And a new generation of farmers should be encouraged to make inroads into the industry instead, and not be put off by the potential difficulties they face, he asserted.

The National Farmers’ Union recently said that those working in the sector should not allow supermarkets to make them pay the cost of in-store price cuts.
