The price of the average trolley load of shopping has risen by 12% year on year, according to price comparison website mySupermarket.
The figure is based on the thousands of orders transferred by mySupermarket.co.uk every week.
The trolley is based on a true average weekly shop of £85 and includes the regular staple products along with the nation’s most regularly purchased grocery item, and now includes non-food.
The prices listed are an average of the price across Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda.
Some of the biggest increases facing shoppers are on the following products:
• Chopped tomatoes have increased by 57%
• Pork sausages have increased by 50%
• Fresh beef mince has increased by 56%
mySupermarket also reckons food and drink prices during March 2009 were up by 4.7% on March 2008.
The figure is based on the data for all food and drink products sold in Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. It compares with the official rate of inflation that currently stands at 3%.
Jonny Steel, spokesperson for mySupermarket said: “Whilst this month shows an average increase of 12% on the cost of nation’s shopping trolley, within this there are products which have jumped in price by over 50%.”
