Asian retailers ‘worried by tobacco consultation’

Asian retailers have said they are worried they are being marginalised in the current tobacco sales consultation, the Tobacco Retailers Alliance (TRA) has claimed.

A number of these retailers have argued that the format of the consultation is making it difficult for them to participate – for example because it is only available in English, the TRA remarked.

President of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents Mahendra Jadeja said that Asian shopkeepers have been “put off” because of the process, while it is hard to contribute simply because of the hours retailers put in during their working lives.

Spokesperson for the TRA Ken Patel added that it is disappointing the Department of Health did not make other copies available in Gujarati or Hindu.

“It would also have been good for them to have a hotline where retailers could call and register their opposition to these proposals,” he commented.

Various parties have in recent times argued that a proposed ban on tobacco display in stores would not be a positive move.

The National Federation of Retail Newsagents said that the move would not encourage young smokers to quit, while the Association of Convenience Stores argued that millions of pounds would be lost by retailers.
