Asda under pressure over pizza factory lay-offs

Trade union GMB is seeking to pressurise Asda over 300 job losses at two UK factories that provide the supermarket giant with pizzas.

A formal 90-day consultation between GMB and Paramount Foods will begin tomorrow (24 June 2008) regarding the redundancies at pizza factories in Deeside and Salford in Greater Manchester.

The company bakes the pizza bases at Salford and the topping plant is at Deeside. Asda is one of the main customers and has reduced the orders to the plant.

Mark Jones, GMB regional official in North Wales, said: “The business has struggled for some time, as supermarkets keep margins to the bare minimum.”

He added: “I will be contacting Paul Kenny, GMB general secretary, to ask that he attempts to secure a meeting with Andy Bond, the boss of Asda, to discuss the situation.

“GMB is the recognised union in Asda and there are regular meetings between Mr Kenny and Mr Bond. On behalf of GMB members in Paramount Foods we will try to get these redundancies onto the agenda for one of these meetings.”

The union has also been putting pressure on rival retailer Marks & Spencer after Northern Foods decided to shut down a factory in Lincolnshire when M&S squeezed margins.
