Asda has started its trial for reusable fabric conditioner packaging within five of its stores, including its Barnsley outlet, according to the IGD grocery think tank.
IGD says the trial, which is being run in conjunction with McBride, Unilever and Eziserv, involves fabric conditioner being piped from a 1,000-litre container at the back of the store to a in-store dispenser.
Customers can then purchase the product using re-usable pouches that can be used up to 10 times.
Purchasing in this way is said to save customers 40p per purchase as compared to traditional plastic bottles.
Julian Walker-Palin, Asda’s head of corporate policy for sustainability and ethics, said: “This project directly engages with consumers by offering a great product which not only has a lower packaging footprint, but also a lower price tag due to the reduced environmental footprint.”
