Asda to ‘double local grocery range’

Asda has said that it will double the number of products from local suppliers it stocks in its stores by 2011.

The Daily Telegraph said the retailer will source more local produce after gaining feedback from consumers who were keen to see these items on the shelves.

In 2002, Asda established 13 third-party run distribution centres in a bid to work directly with local suppliers and improve relationships with them.

These centres act as representatives for the suppliers, along with co-ordinating deliveries.

Today one of Tesco’s non-food suppliers has said that the company’s decision to extend payment period from 30 to 60 days is a potentially damaging one.

Reckitt Benckiser’s chief executive Bart Becht said there is a possibility smaller suppliers could be forced out of business.
