Asda now “second largest online grocer”

Online shopping sales at Asda have grown in the last 12 weeks, making the supermarket the second largest internet grocer in the UK, according to new figures.

TNS Worldpanel revealed that home shopping sales at the supermarket jumped 71.8% year-on-year in the period to 15 June 2008, reports the Independent.

While internet shopping at Asda grew by 56% in the week to 15 June, it rose by 8.3% at fellow retailer and close rival Sainsbury’s, the paper added.

Andy Bond, chief executive at the Wal-Mart controlled company, confirmed that in recent times Asda has been attempting to boost its presence in the online marketplace.

The TNS Worldpanel figures take into account food and drink along with non-food items.

Sainsbury’s refused to be drawn on the development but claimed that it was still ahead of Asda in the online grocery stakes.

Over the 12-week period, sales over the internet at Sainsbury’s are understood to have grown by 17.3%, the Independent said.
