Families have more money than they did in September, but this will probably be saved away in 2009 rather than spent, according to Asda.
The supermarket – on its latest monthly income tracker – said families had £135 a week for recreational purposes in November.
Asda said this is 5.1% lower than the same month last year but £4 higher than the barometer’s lowest point in September.
The overall cost of living fell as the price of petrol dropped considerably, Asda added.
But 70% of people polled by the firm said they will save cash if their disposable income rises in 2009.
Chief executive and president Andy Bond said: “There is some good news for families as inflation falls and disposable incomes increase but the mood of the nation is that cutting back on conspicuous spending, being more frugal and an increased savings mentality will be a priority for most families in 2009″
Earlier this month, Lightspeed Research found 29% of Brits will lower their Christmas spending this year.
The situation for families could improve again further in the new year, Asda said, as inflation looks set to fall and the VAT cut leads to lower prices on shelves.
Asda introduced the VAT at its tills at the beginning of the month.
In its latest staple items study, mySupermarket.co.uk said annual food price rises are beginning to stabilise.
