Asda 2p sausages to combat credit crunch

Asda has slashed the price of its economy line sausages to just 2p each in a week-long promotion in its stores.

The supermarket chain has this week cut the price of an eight-pack of its Smartprice sausages from 54p to 16p, the equivalent of just 2p each.

The retailer claims that with its 2.5 kg Smartprice potatoes at 73p and its 1.5kg of carrots at 68p, customers can provide the whole family with a bangers, mash and carrot meal for £1.57p.

Jenny Liggat, sausage buyer at Asda, said: “Families are feeling the impact of the credit crunch in their pockets. Food prices have increased, but Asda is committed to continually offering customers great value products at an everyday low price.

“Our Smartprice ranges are very popular with customers and we thought the idea of a 2p sausage would be welcome news in the aisles,” she said.

“All of our Smartprice ranges contain no artificial colours or flavourings.”
Sales across the 1,000 Smartprice range are said to be up 15%.
