ALMR criticises Sainsbury’s lager prices

Sainsbury’s has come in for criticism from the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) for allegedly selling alcoholic drinks below cost price.

Over the bank holiday weekend the supermarket sold 60 bottles of 284ml Stella Artois for £20, the ALMR revealed, while other offers were opened up on Kronenbourg, Beck’s and Bulmers.

Chief executive at the organisation Nick Bish said that Stella at Sainsbury’s across the weekend was “frighteningly cheap”.

“Pubs and bars promote sensible drinking in a supervised environment and have led the way in responsible pricing. It is clear that, despite their rhetoric, the supermarket chains have no inclination to show such restraint. It is time for government action,” he said.
