Aldi to “go on as normal” following Tesco move

Aldi will continue as normal, one of its managing directors has said, despite the foray into the discounter market by Tesco this week.

UK and Ireland group managing director Paul Foley said his company has “fundamentally” lower costs than its rivals, and works on a lower margin.

He suggested that this means the outfit can offer its customers good quality items for low prices, reports Retail Week.

And Foley responded to claims made by Waitrose’s Mark Price that the John Lewis food arm is cheaper than the discounter in some areas, contending he would “defy” anyone to shop in both for the same cost during a week.

“We appeal as much to the quality seeker as the bargain hunter, because many customers are looking for ways to maintain, not restrain, their lifestyle and simply need to spend less,” he told Retail Week.

The company operates with the goal of not just generating cheaper prices, he added, but with trying to sell good products with lower charges.

His comments came after both Tesco and Asda unveiled wide-ranging promotions and price cuts, with the latter cutting 5,000 own brand and other branded lines.
