And Foley responded to claims made by Waitrose’s Mark Price that the John Lewis food arm is cheaper than the discounter in some areas, contending he would “defy” anyone to shop in both for the same cost during a week.
“We appeal as much to the quality seeker as the bargain hunter, because many customers are looking for ways to maintain, not restrain, their lifestyle and simply need to spend less,” he told Retail Week.
The company operates with the goal of not just generating cheaper prices, he added, but with trying to sell good products with lower charges.
His comments came after both Tesco and Asda unveiled wide-ranging promotions and price cuts, with the latter cutting 5,000 own brand and other branded lines.
