Aldi boosted by ‘wealthier’ consumers

Aldi has said that sales grew by a quarter in the last year helped by the credit crunch and richer consumers opting for its discount groceries.

Overall sales at Aldi rose 24.8% to £2.15bn while sales grew 22.2% in December alone compared with the same month in 2007.

In 2008, Aldi boosted the number of stores it operates in the UK from 416 to 457.

UK managing director Paul Foley told the Financial Times: “There is a [credit crunch] factor in [the growth in wealthier consumers shopping]. Perhaps it has put a few per cent [of sales] on, but we would have had this traction with or without the economic situation.

“Consumers are trying something new, but it is also the style and the quality of the offer that is attractive.”

On today’s TNS Worldpanel market share figures, Aldi boosted sales by 25.4% in the 12 weeks to 28 December.
