Thousands more post offices could be at risk, on top of the 2,500 already allotted for closure, according to press reports.
The Post Office has not set a minimum number of outlets for closure and MPs on the Commons Business Enterprise Select Committee warned there could be a further 4,000 closures.
Committee chairman Peter Luff said further closures would mainly be driven by subpostmasters retiring and not being replaced.
Such closures would take the number of post office branches down to 7,500.
