Sainsbury's extends carbon footprint scheme

Friday, 18 December 2009

sainsburys frontSainsbury's is to roll out its carbon footprint initiative to help more farmers cut their emissions.

The scheme already includes the retailer's 325 dairy farmers and will be extended to 6,500 beef, lamb, pig, cheese and poultry farmers in the New Year.

Annie Graham, Sainsbury's head of brand sustainability, said the scheme was not just about environmental improvements but also increased efficiency and boosted profit margins for farmers in Sainsbury‘s supply chain..

The carbon footprint initiative was introduced to Sainsbury's 325 dairy development group farms in 2007.

Since then the supermarket has invested over £20 million into the dairy scheme and claims to have saved 5,000 tonnes of carbon from the milk supply chain through driving efficiencies in water, fertilizer and feed usage.
