Threat to Sainsbury's plan for Bristol store

Monday, 02 November 2009

sainsburys frontSainsbury's plan to build a superstore on Bristol City FC's Ashton Gate site could be threatened by an alternative development proposed by a Bristol architect.

Architect George Ferguson said the response to his plans from city councillors had been "extraordinarily positive".

Bristol City has signed a deal with Sainsbury's to build a new store on the site, subject to council approval.

But a consortium including Ferguson has put forward an alternative scheme of more than 300 flats and houses, plus leisure and commercial properties.

The football club has said plans for its new 30,000-seat, £90m stadium - due to be completed by 2012 - are dependent on selling its current site to a retailer.

Sainsbury's plan for Ashton gate has been backed by Bristol South Labour MP Dawn Primorolo, who said it would be good for the club and the city.
