The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has endorsed the findings of the Food Standards Agency(FSA) that supermarket own-brand goods have less salt than branded products.
The BRC said the FSA's Salt Survey highlighted the fact that over a number of years its members have significantly reduced the level of salt in food.
It said this was demonstrated by the number of retailers who have already met the FSA's 2010 target - a year early.
To help customers make informed choices about their salt consumption, retailers provide very clear nutritional information. Salt content is prominently shown on the front of own-label food products.
Andrea M Inchausti, BRC assistant food director, said "Our members are Europe's leaders in salt reduction and have made excellent progress in the last decade. The FSA's latest findings confirm supermarket's own-brand goods contain less salt than their branded equivalent.
"Retailers will continue to play their part but the pace of reduction must be realistic and account for consumer demand."
