Asda creates 7,000 jobs and helps long-term unemployed

Wednesday, 28 January 2009
Asda said this morning it will create up to 7,000 new jobs this year as it expands store space and non-food operations.

The supermarket chain said it will work alongside the government to find new members of staff who have been out of work for six months.

14 new supermarkets will be opened and existing venues expanded, Asda said, while the internet division will employ another 2,000 people.

Chief executive Andy Bond said: "We will also be helping 3,000 long-term unemployed get back into work by specifically targeting them for existing vacancies in our business.

"Our track record of recruiting and retaining people is second to none, which is why we have the lowest turnover and most motivated workforce in British retail."

Secretary of state for work and pensions James Purnell said schemes involving Asda have been "a real success".

This week Asda said consumers were £4 a week worse off in December than they were a year earlier.
