GMB warns M&S over possible job losses

Tuesday, 06 January 2009
GMB Union has warned Marks & Spencer (M&S) that it must give staff sufficient notice if today's reports of redundancies are correct.

According to GMB, the retailer has to give workers a 90-day consultation period and not treat every shop as an individual workplace, something which would impose a 30-day notice period.

Legal officer Maria Ludkin said: "M&S dismissed reports that there would be redundancies, when GMB members and M&S whistle blower Tony Goode accused it of cutting the redundancy pay in preparation for redundancies.

"GMB will not hesitate to take employment tribunal cases for a 90-day protective award as we have done at JJB Sports."

The Times said today that M&S is planning to cut almost 1,000 positions on the shop floor and hundreds of others at its head office.

Goode was sacked by the company after he told the press it was allegedly planning to change redundancy terms.

He urged M&S staff to get in touch with the union if they think they may be affected by any potential job losses.
