Usdaw promises help to redundant Woolworths staff

Tuesday, 06 January 2009
Usdaw, the shopworkers' union, is continuing to help Woolworths staff find new jobs after the retailer collapsed.

The firm said it is making contact with companies that buy former Woolworths branches and asking the buyers to give priority to these redundant workers.

National officer John Gorle said these people are "experienced retail staff" and have stayed loyal to Woolworths during a difficult period.

"We will of course continue to make the recommendations when we know which other companies are buying the former Woolworths stores," he commented.

The union criticised the move by administrator Deloitte to close all stores by 5 January in December.

Usdaw also said it is working with other organisations to ensure that displaced staff are put into new positions wherever possible.

General secretary John Hannett said: "We will work with Job Centre Plus, to find new vacancies, and Next Steps, a government organisation that gives advice on careers.

"The union will also be in contact with local colleges, which will be offering free Skills for Life training."

The remaining Woolworths stores are opening for the final time today (6 January) after Deloitte chose to keep trading for an extra day.

In the week before Christmas, former Woolworths boss Sir Geoff Mulcahy criticised the way Deloitte has handled the situation.
