Asda Christmas sales up after food boost

Wednesday, 31 December 2008
Asda recorded sales beyond its own expectations in the week leading up to Christmas, the supermarket chain said today.

The company served 1.3 million more customers during the seven-day period than in the corresponding week last year, while 23 December was its busiest ever day.

Chief executive Andy Bond said food and drink sales held up well as shoppers chose to share these items with family and friends at Christmas, despite the prevailing economic problems.

He commented: "As we anticipated, Christmas came very late with parents buying practical presents such as slippers and dressing gowns for each other but still making sure their kids' stockings were full on Christmas morning.

"2008 has been one of our best years and we have rounded it off in style with Christmas sales ahead of our expectations."

Bond said the supermarket was helped by local produce, with sales up 100% year-on-year.

Eight of Asda's stores, including those at Derby, Havant and Gateshead, reported sales higher than £4m, as 47 stores saw sales over £3m.

This week rival Waitrose also said 23 December had been its best trading day ever.

Just before Christmas, Asda suggested shoppers' disposable incomes are rising, but people are more likely to save than spend money in the new year.
