Sainsbury's boss King approached by mayor over Olympics role

Monday, 22 December 2008
Sainsbury's chief executive Justin King has been asked by London mayor Boris Johnson to advise him on the 2012 Olympic Games.

King has been approached after previous advisor David Ross, the Carphone Warehouse co-founder, resigned this month after failing to disclose he had used company shareholdings as collateral against personal loans.

Johnson is interested in acquiring the services of King because of the retail chain boss's interest in sport and Sainsbury's attempts to support these activities in schools.

Sources close to the supermarket said King has yet to decide if he will accept the invitation by the former MP.

Johnson's office said: "The mayor is talking to a number of people about this position and an announcement will be issued in due course."

Last month, Sainsbury's posted like-for-like sales growth of 3.9%, a trend it said was down to its "universal appeal".

King has also said that environmentalists are obsessed with plastic bags and they are not the biggest obstacle to preventing climate change.
